A rewarding hike to the summit with lovely views of the Brunico valley basin
A varied mountain hike through idyllic woodland and alpine pastures, up into the alpine landscape. The route takes you past the alp hut Tesselberger Alm and on across open pastures to the striking Schönbichl. As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes increasingly alpine and impressive views of the surrounding mountains open up.
At the summit in particular, a sweeping panorama awaits, offering views of the Zillertal Alps, the northern Dolomites and the Rieserferner Group. The combination of varied scenery, peaceful woodland paths, alpine pastures and scenic mountain trails makes this tour a rewarding experience of nature and the mountains.
Along with Geige and Kor, the Schönbichl is a stage in a circular mountain walk offering particularly stunning views.
From the car park, follow trail marker no. 7 towards the alp hut Tesselberger Alm and Schönbichl. The route follows a forest path – which is quite steep in places but easy to follow – steadily uphill alongside the Tesselberger stream until you finally reach the alp hut Tesselberger Alm, situated at around 2,000 metres. Here continue to follow trail marker No. 7. Above the alp, the path narrows and turns into a mountain track. This leads further uphill through open pastureland, and as you gain altitude, the towering Schönbichl becomes increasingly visible. The marked path continues across the mountainside towards the summit. As you go, increasingly sweeping views of the surrounding mountains open up. The final section finally leads up to the summit cross, where there is a viewing bench offering a far-reaching panorama. You can see the partially glaciated peaks of the Zillertal Alps, the northern Dolomites and the Rieserferner Group. For the return journey, follow the same route via Trail No. 7 back to the Tesselberger Alm and then down the valley along the Tesselberger stream to the starting point.
Tesselberg/Montassilone is only accessible by car. Alternatively, you can take bus no. 450 to Gais, stop Dorf/Paese, and then walk up to Tesselberg/Montassilone (approx. 1h walking time).
From Bruneck, follow the Pustertal SS49 road towards Percha and, at the first junction after the petrol station at the entrance to the village, turn left onto Oberwielenbach Straße. After about 2 km, at the junction, turn left onto the road towards Amaten and continue on to Tesselberg.
