The traditional church festivals in South Tyrol date back to the medieval celebration of a church’s consecration. Originally, they marked either the consecration of a church or the feast day of its patron saint. Following the church service, the occasion gradually developed into a village festival with music, dancing and traditional food – a custom that continues to strengthen community spirit and preserve local traditions to this day.

In Uttenheim, the traditional church festival is celebrated in style every year on the second weekend of October. The festivities traditionally begin on Saturday with the raising of the “Michl-Baum”. Afterwards, a large marquee festival, a lively atmosphere, great music and a disco provide entertainment well into the night.

On Sunday, the traditional cattle drive down from the alpine pastures takes centre stage, accompanied by outstanding brass band music. The festival also has plenty to offer in culinary terms: visitors can enjoy typical local specialities, including the popular South Tyrolean Tirtlan.
